How Floating Works
The density of the saltwater puts the floater in an environment where about 80% of the gravity we usually feel is no longer affecting the body. We use a large portion of our mental and physical resources to counteracting the force of gravity and the relief of this effort leaves our body with a surplus of energy and processing power at its disposal. Without this “gravity tax” the body focuses its energies on testing, recuperating, and healing anything that needs attention. The gravity-reduced environment allows our body to decompress, especially throughout the joints and the spinal column.
Mental & Physical Relaxation
Floating is a way to pause the hectic, saturated world and enter a state of deep mental and physical relaxation. By giving yourself a break from the endless input of sensory experiences, your mind has a chance to recharge, rest, and emerge to face the world with renewed perspective and energy. All of our float pods contain not only state of the art purification and UV & ozone filtrations, but about ten inches of super-saturated saltwater at a temperature of 93 degrees (skin temperature). This creates an environment similar to the Dead Sea, which enables you to float freely on the surface of the water. This creates a situation where your body is completely free from the detrimental forces of gravity, allowing virtually every muscle in your body to completely relax.
Friendly staff, one of a kind floating experience that I’ve never seen around here, and a wonderful relaxing environment.

Are you a first-time floater?
Floating can be one of the most up-lifting spa experience a person can endure. However, most first-time floaters find themselves weary because of the unknown process of floating in an enclosed float pod. To help alleviate your questions, we compiled a list of instructions on what to prepare and expect from your first float at Serenity Waters in Holmen, Wisconsin.
How to Prepare
- Avoid caffeine or any stimulants 4-6 hours ahead
- Avoid drinking lots of fluids before
- Have a small snack 60-90 minutes ahead
- Don’t shave or wax that day of your float
- Avoid wearing contact lenses
- Avoid wearing makeup, lotions, colognes, or perfumes
- You may bring a swimsuit if you prefer, but most floaters wear their birthday suit
Arrive 15-20 minutes before your appointment to check-in and fill out waivers before your float. To speed up this process, download, print, and sign your waiver form, then bring with you to your appointment.
To begin, use our private showers to rinse off debris and oils to prep the skin. Next, slowly, step into the tank and lie on your back. Put your arms out to the sides of the tank and hold yourself still for 20-30 seconds, or until you feel stabilized. Then release your arms to your side; focus on your breathing and let your thoughts flow. You are in a safe and protected space; this hour is to invest in you. If you need help with anything, we have a convenient 2-way intercom.
The After Bliss
Once your float experience is complete, get up slowly from the float pod and take a minute or two to collect yourself as you re-enter the world. We strongly recommend showering again to remove the salt from your skin and hair to prevent feeling crusty. Make sure to visit our quiet room after your float. Doing so will promote your float benefits long after your experience. Make sure to hydrate to fully feel refreshed throughout the day.
Should You Use Floatation Therapy?
To ensure a comfortable, clean and safe floatation experience, please note the following:
- Conditions that are prohibited from using float pods:
- Communicable or infectious diseases, illnesses, or skin disorders
- Medications that may have adverse effects due to immersion in the concentrated magnesium sulfate (Epsom salt) water solution
- Under the influence of any medication, drugs, or alcohol
- Women who are currently menstruating
- Provide a medical authorization to float if you:
- Are pregnant
- Have a history of high (>= 180/120) or low (<=90/50) blood pressure
- Have a chronic heart or kidney disease
- Are diabetic with insulin dependency
- Suffer from uncontrolled seizures, epilepsy, or incontinence
- Recent keratin hair treatments and hair dyes can be affected by the highly saline water in our float pods. We recommend waiting at least 10 days before floating. If the color is not rinsing out when you shower it’s usually fine to float.
The staff explained everything to this first time floater, and I felt very comfortable with the whole experience.

FAQ’s About Floatation Therapy
No. It’s nearly impossible to drown in our float pods due to the high density of the salt in the water; regardless of your size or weight. IF you were somehow able to manage to turn over, the salt in the water would sting your eyes and wake you.
Some people love sleeping in our float pods. One hour of sleep in the tank is roughly equivalent to 4 hours of regular sleep.
Yes, however, it is encouraged to leave extra time after your float before rushing into something hectic.
